Cinchona Botanical Gardens sits high on the southern slopes of the Blue Mountains, at around 4,900 feet, on land first planted in the 1860s to grow cinchona trees for quinine. The plantation itself did not last, but the garden that grew out of it survives as one of Jamaica's oldest high-elevation botanical sites, and a direct link to the region's long history of experimenting with what its cool, wet slopes can grow.

Why was Cinchona created?

Cinchona bark was, in the nineteenth century, the source of quinine, then the standard treatment for malaria and a commodity in high demand across the tropical world. Jamaica's colonial government began growing cinchona trees from seed obtained through Kew Gardens in London starting in 1860. In 1868 it set aside a 600-acre tract on the southern slopes of the Blue Mountains, between 4,000 and 6,000 feet, as a dedicated plantation, and planted around 40 acres with five different cinchona species. The main station, about ten acres at roughly 5,000 feet, was known at the time as Bellevue House and Grounds.

From cinchona estate to botanical garden

The Jamaican cinchona trade did not become the lasting industry its founders hoped for, and government cultivation work was later shifted mainly to other plantations. What remained at the original site evolved instead into a botanical garden, developed under William Fawcett, who directed Jamaica's Department of Public Gardens and Plantations. The elevation and climate that had made the site attractive for cinchona, cool enough that recorded winter lows sat in the low fifties Fahrenheit even as Kingston stayed warm year-round, made it just as useful for growing other plants that could not survive in the lowlands.

The New York Botanical Garden connection

In 1902 and 1903, Dr. Nathaniel Lord Britton, then director-in-chief of the New York Botanical Garden, secured a lease on the property to establish both a tropical plant nursery and a research laboratory. A 1904 account of the station describes its facilities in some detail: a furnished residence, a stable, servants' quarters, two glasshouses, three buildings used as laboratories and offices, a storehouse, and a small building set aside for visitors staying overnight. The arrangement gave American botanists a working base for studying and propagating tropical plants at an elevation, and in a climate, unlike anything available to them at home.

Cinchona today

Cinchona Botanical Gardens is recorded today among Jamaica's historic botanical gardens, documented by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust alongside Bath, Castleton and Hope. Its defining feature remains what it always was: elevation. Records from the early twentieth century put its annual rainfall at over 90 inches and its mean temperature in the low sixties Fahrenheit, figures that mark it out as one of the coolest, wettest cultivated sites on the island; That combination still supports plantings that would struggle almost anywhere else in Jamaica, and it connects Cinchona directly to the cloud forest and unusual plant life documented on plants of the Blue Mountains and the Blue Mountains cloud forest.
