The Blue Mountain Growing Region

A guide to Jamaica's Blue Mountains: the legal coffee boundary, elevation classes, terrain, climate, soils and the national park that protects the upper slopes.

Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee comes from a legally defined area in the Blue Mountains of eastern Jamaica, north-east of Kingston. The area is set by a boundary line in Jamaican regulations, not by altitude alone. Farms sit on steep slopes where mist is frequent, rainfall is high and temperatures stay cool for the tropics.

Where is the Blue Mountain coffee region?

The Blue Mountains are Jamaica's highest range. They occupy the eastern end of the island and rise steeply behind Kingston. The limestone John Crow Mountains lie further east, and the smaller Port Royal Mountains lie to the west. The upper slopes and forests of these ranges are protected within a national park, described below.

For coffee, the region also has a legal meaning. The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority Regulations, 2018 define Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee as coffee “grown in the Blue Mountain area of Jamaica”. A schedule to the regulations describes that area as a loop of named places. The line starts at Skibo and runs east-south-east to Swift River, Chelsea and Durham (Samba Hill). It then turns south-east past Belleview and along the western slope of the John Crow Mountain to Cedar Grove. From there it heads west and north through Font Hill, Ramble, Good Hope, Dallas, Industry Village, Maryland, Golden Spring, Brandon Hill and Tranquility, and returns to Skibo.

The same description appears, almost word for word, in the Coffee Industry Regulations of 1953. The boundary has been part of Jamaican law for more than 70 years.

Which parishes are included?

The boundary follows places, not parish lines, so published lists of parishes differ. JACRA's own coffee pages place the Blue Mountain area in St Andrew, St Thomas and Portland. Many other accounts, including a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) case study, name four parishes and add St Mary. Where the question matters, the boundary in the regulations is the test.

What elevation is Blue Mountain coffee grown at?

The 2018 regulations define Blue Mountain coffee by place, not height. Even so, an elevation band is widely quoted. The Jamaica Information Service gives 3,000 to 5,500 feet (about 910 to 1,680 meters) and says coffee grown below 3,000 feet is classed as Jamaica High Mountain. WIPO's case study gives the same band.

Other published figures differ. Some importers quote different upper and lower limits. Perfect Daily Grind and Wikipedia put the High Mountain class at roughly 1,500 to 3,000 feet (about 460 to 910 meters). Treat any single figure as a guide to where the farms are, not as the legal definition.

The four protected names

The 2018 regulations define four product names. Two are defined by where the coffee grows. Two are blends.

Blue Mountain Peak and the terrain

Blue Mountain Peak is the highest point in Jamaica, at 2,256 meters (7,402 feet). It stands on the border of Portland and St Thomas. The range climbs from the coastal plain to these heights within about 16 kilometers, an unusually steep rise.

The geology is mixed. The John Crow Mountains are limestone, like much of Jamaica. The Blue Mountains and Port Royal Mountains are a complex mix of volcanic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, with shale in places. The slopes are steep and erode easily. A national land capability map classes most land in the Blue and John Crow Mountains as unsuitable for cultivation, because of the steep slopes and the shallow, rocky soils.

Coffee is grown here all the same. The national park's management plan calls it the principal large-scale crop in the Blue Mountains and estimates about 12,000 acres under coffee in the eastern region. Because the slopes are so steep, cherries are picked by hand. Individual farms and factories are described in Blue Mountain estates.

What is the climate like in the Blue Mountains?

Elevation makes the range cooler and wetter than the rest of Jamaica. Meteorological Service figures reproduced in the park's management plan show the difference in average monthly temperatures:

  • Cinchona, in the Blue Mountains at 1,493 meters: maximum 21.7 °C, minimum 13.2 °C.
  • Kingston, at 27 meters: maximum 31.4 °C, minimum 22.8 °C.

The plan also cites records from the 1890s for the highest point in the park, with a lowest reading of 0.7 °C.

Rainfall

Moist north-east trade winds blow in from the Atlantic and rise over the northern slopes. As the air cools, it drops its rain. The southern side of the main ridge, the Grand Ridge, lies in a rain shadow. The management plan gives these approximate annual totals:

  • Southern slopes: about 2,600 mm.
  • Northern slopes: about 3,300 mm.
  • Blue Mountain Peak: about 4,300 mm.
  • Rio Grande Valley: over 5,000 mm, with more than 7,000 mm recorded.

There are two rainy seasons, centered on May and October. Rainfall varies a great deal within and between years, and heavy rain on steep ground brings floods and landslides.

Mist and cloud

Mist is a defining feature. According to the management plan, the higher elevations are covered in mist for over 70% of daylight hours on the northern slopes and about 30% on the southern slopes. The mist raises humidity and cuts incoming light to about a quarter of normal levels. For that reason, much of the forest here is classed as cloud forest rather than rain forest.

Growers work with these conditions. The plan notes that shade trees are seldom used on coffee farms, partly because of a perceived risk of leaf spot disease and partly because of a view that the mist gives enough shade.

The pattern is not fixed. In 2025, JACRA's senior director of coffee told the Jamaica Observer that the region's familiar midday rain had become less reliable from around 2012, with effects on how the crop matures.

What are the soils like?

Blue Mountain soils form mainly on metamorphic and igneous rock, with soils derived from shale common in the western parts of the range. The park's management plan describes them as generally highly porous and heavily leached. As a result they are low in nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, and have a low pH. On steep slopes they erode easily.

Those descriptions refer mainly to forest land. Farmland is often cleared of trees and fertilised, and the plan notes that the fertilizers used are usually inorganic. Some coffee sellers describe Blue Mountain soils as rich. The park's survey paints a leaner picture, so treat “rich soil” claims with some caution. What the survey does confirm is that the soils are porous, so water drains through them quickly.

Is the region a national park or a UNESCO site?

Partly both. The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park was designated on 26 February 1993 under the Natural Resources Conservation Authority Act. It is Jamaica's first and only national park. It covers 41,198 hectares and is managed by the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust.

In 2015 the Blue and John Crow Mountains were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as a mixed site, recognized for both natural and cultural values. The inscribed property covers 26,252 hectares. Its cultural value centers on the Windward Maroons, for whom the rugged forest was a refuge and a stronghold. Its natural value lies in montane rain and cloud forests with high levels of plant endemism.

Coffee farming lies mainly outside the inscribed property, but the two are closely linked. The forests protect watersheds that supply water to agriculture in eastern Jamaica, including Blue Mountain coffee. Yet the park's managers describe coffee growing as a major threat of encroachment, and IUCN's World Heritage Outlook notes pressure from attempts to expand plantations.

How long has coffee been grown here?

Coffee was introduced to Jamaica in 1728. The park's management plan notes that the altitude and climate of the Blue Mountain slopes were found to suit high-quality coffee, and that grants of Crown land for coffee from the late 18th century led to forest clearing on the southern slopes. How do these conditions shape the cup?

No single factor explains how a coffee tastes, and claims about terroir are hard to test. Still, the region's conditions point in one direction. Cool temperatures and frequent cloud are generally thought to slow the ripening of coffee cherries. A 2021 Perfect Daily Grind explainer links the misty cloud cover to lower temperatures, slower maturation and a more complex flavor. Reporting in the Jamaica Observer in 2025 connected the old pattern of midday rain with slower maturation and denser beans.

Published descriptions, from the Jamaica Information Service to importers, often mention a smooth, sweet, balanced cup with little bitterness. Those are tasting impressions, not measurements, and they depend on grade, processing and roast as much as on place. Variety matters too: JACRA names Arabica Typica as the dominant variety in the Jamaican coffee industry.
