Temperature, rainfall and cloud cover in the Blue Mountains change sharply with elevation, shaping the wet and dry seasons and, growers say, how slowly coffee ripens.
The Blue Mountains rise from near sea level to 7,402 feet (2,256 m) in under 10 miles, so climate changes fast with elevation: warm and humid at the base, cool and often misty near the peak. Jamaica's wettest months are May through October, and the range's windward slopes catch far more rain than anywhere else on the island.
Temperature by elevation
Temperature in the Blue Mountains drops steadily with height. Jamaica's coastal lowlands typically run from about 23.5°C to 30°C (74°F to 86°F) year-round, cooling to roughly 15–22°C (59–72°F) at higher elevations and to below 10°C (50°F) near Blue Mountain Peak, the island's highest point. One estimate puts the range even more starkly, from about 27°C (81°F) at sea level to around 5°C (41°F) at the peak, a drop covering just 16 km (about 10 miles) inland. Rainfall and the wet and dry seasons
Jamaica's rain falls unevenly across the year and across the island. Nationally, rainfall is heaviest from May to October, with peaks in those two months, while the rest of the year is comparatively dry. The windward Blue Mountains and neighboring John Crow Mountains catch the brunt of moisture-laden trade winds: annual rainfall exceeds 5,080 mm (200 in) at the higher elevations, and some spots receive more than 7,620 mm (300 in) a year. Mist and cloud cover
Cloud and mist are constant features of the higher Blue Mountains. From around 1,000 m and above, according to the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust, the mountains support a cloud forest, a rare habitat that covers only a small share of tropical forest worldwide and stays damp from clouds condensing on the canopy as much as from rainfall itself. Higher still, above roughly 1,800 m, the vegetation turns to elfin woodland wrapped in near-continuous mist. Coffee is grown below this zone, but many farms still sit within reach of daily cloud cover, which keeps humidity high and moderates daytime heat even lower down the slopes. Growers commonly note that this cloud cover also softens direct sunlight on coffee plants during the hottest part of the day, though how much that specifically contributes to flavor, as opposed to temperature and rainfall generally, is not something this guide found settled in any single study.

Where Blue Mountain coffee actually grows within this climate
Coffee is grown at elevations commonly quoted as 3,000 to 5,500 ft (roughly 900 to 1,675 m), though this is a commonly used range rather than a legally defined band. Growers and coffee writers commonly link the Blue Mountains' cool, misty, high-rainfall climate to slower ripening of the coffee cherry, and slower ripening is often said to give sugars and flavor compounds more time to develop in the bean.
