The Coffee Berry Borer in Jamaica

The coffee berry borer has challenged Jamaican coffee farms since the late 1970s, and growers manage it through sanitation, traps and integrated pest control.

The coffee berry borer, a tiny beetle that bores into coffee cherries, has been a persistent pest on Jamaican coffee farms since the late 1970s. Left unmanaged it can force whole harvests to be downgraded; farmers and regulators control it mainly through field sanitation, pheromone traps and integrated pest management rather than any single fix.

When did the coffee berry borer arrive in Jamaica?

Jamaica's coffee industry has been managing the coffee berry borer since 1978, according to Louis Campbell, a former advisory services manager at the Coffee Industry Board (CIB), the regulator that preceded today's Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA). Public Jamaican sources reviewed for this guide do not give an exact month of first detection beyond that figure, so 1978 should be read as the date the industry itself has publicly used, not necessarily the very first sighting.

What damage does the coffee berry borer cause?

The borer bores into the coffee cherry and lays eggs inside, where larvae feed on the bean. Even berries that are otherwise the right color, size and taste are downgraded once the borer has been inside them. "You will not be able to export a Grade A bean even if the beans are of the correct color, size and taste," Campbell said in 2007, describing how the pest cuts into a farm's export-grade output rather than just its total volume.

A CIB assessment in 2012 put the industry's losses from the pest at 13.4% of coffee received at the time, and warned that without better control it could cost growers up to half of a harvest and put as much as $432 million in export earnings at risk. Because downgraded beans still cost the same to pick, pulp and dry, a bad borer year squeezes farmers twice: less coffee reaches the top grades, and the coffee that does reach export is worth less on world markets even before quality is judged on taste.

Field sanitation and the BROCAP trap

Sanitation is the most consistently cited defense: stripping a plot of all ripe, overripe and fallen berries at the end of harvest denies the next generation of borers anywhere to breed. The CIB has traced one resurgence directly to lapsed sanitation. After Hurricane Ivan struck in 2004, destroyed berries temporarily cut the pest's food source and its numbers fell; farmers assumed the lower risk would hold, eased off sanitation, and infestations climbed back by the 2006–07 crop.

Jamaica has also used a specific trap called BROCAP since 2003. Developed in El Salvador and distributed by the CIB, it lures and catches adult borers so farmers can see populations at a glance. "We have seen one year where the trap reduced the borer population from one million to about 300,000," said Gusland McCook, a CIB regional advisory officer, though he cautioned that the trap alone "will not reduce the borer population to levels that we would like it to be" and works best paired with careful harvesting and, when needed, insecticide.

Integrated pest management and biological control

Jamaica's program follows the same logic used across the coffee world, known as integrated pest management, or IPM: combining monitoring traps, strict sanitation and targeted spraying only when populations justify it, instead of relying on any single tool. Elsewhere in the coffee world, growers have added biological control to that mix, most notably the fungus Beauveria bassiana, which infects and kills the borer; commercial formulations built on the fungus are used in coffee-growing regions such as Hawaii. Jamaican sources reviewed for this guide describe sanitation, trapping and chemical control as the pillars of the local program, and do not document a Beauveria-based product in commercial use on the island. The common thread across every method is timing: a trap, a sanitation pass or a spray applied too late, after borers have already tunnelled into the cherry, does far less good than the same action applied while adults are still moving between berries looking for a place to lay eggs.

JACRA and Ministry of Agriculture programs

A dedicated task force met farmers in Bangor Ridge, Portland, in February 2012, covering communities including Cherry Hill, Mount St Bernard and Mahoe. The CIB distributed roughly 50,000 pheromone traps as part of that push, alongside public-awareness campaigns and sanitation training. "What we want to do is take back our industry and re-engage the farmers to the farms and to reap the berries," said Christopher Gentles, then the CIB's director general.

JACRA took over coffee regulation from the CIB and continues to license and monitor coffee farmers, dealers and processors as part of its wider role, described further on Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. Government pest-control pushes have periodically been paired with fertilizer and other input support for growers in the main coffee parishes, alongside separate programs targeting coffee leaf rust, the other disease that most concerns Blue Mountain growers.
